Gas Explosion: Chevron Must Pay $3bn Fine, FG Insists

Gas-Explosion-1805.jpg - Gas-Explosion-1805.jpgGas Explosion
The Director-General/Chief Executive Officer of the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA), Peter Idabor, on Thursday insisted that Chevron must pay an administrative fine of $3 billion to the federal government for the environmental disaster that accompanied the gas explosion in some communities in Bayelsa State.

Idabor stated this before the House Committee on Environment, recalling the loss of hunting and fishing grounds, particularly in Koluama, a nearby settlement, and other neighbouring communities.

“The gas that erupted from the subsurface sustained the fire that raged for days. The Agency has investigated the incident; the fire was caused by equipment failure. Chevron is to take responsibility for the millions of cubic feet of gas blown into the air,” he said.

He explained that due to the nature of the gaseous substance, it was very difficult to assess the level of damage, as the terrain was in constant flux.

“Our perspective is that the environment is in a state of flux and impacted on the people, and they had to travel far to catch fish.
“The $3 billion administrative fine will go to the federal government; and the federal government will determine how to distribute it to rehabilitate the affected communities. We’re tired of oil companies polluting our environment.”
But chairman of the committee, Hon. UcheEkwunife said that the committee would take its time to deliberate on the $3 billion fine proposed by NOSDRA, and communicate its decision to Chevron at a later date.

Boko Haram: Sambo Sues for Dialogue

260212F3.Namadi-Sambo.jpg - 260212F3.Namadi-Sambo.jpgVice President Namadi Sambo Saturday reiterated the call for dialogue with Boko Haram, the Islamic sect which has sustained a spate of terror attacks on states in Northern Nigeria.
Sambo was speaking at the closing ceremony of the second edition of the Nigerian Air Force Air Exposition 2012 at NAF Base, Kaduna, to mark the 48th anniversary of the force.
Also Saturday at the 2012 convention of Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation in the Americas (NIDOA), the Arewa Consultative Forum Board of Trustees chairman, Lt.-Gen. Jeremiah Useni, assured Nigerians that the sect’s activities would not break up the country.
“Nigeria will not break up because of Boko Haram, Nigeria will not go to blazes because of Boko Haram,” he said at the event held in Arlington, Virginia, US.
Sambo, in his address at the NAF event, urged the Islamic group, which he did not mention by name, to use the window of opportunity provided by the federal government to embrace the call for a negotiated end to the crises that have terrorised the northern part of the country.
He said: “I must say that we are leaving no stone unturned at ensuring the safety of lives and property of all Nigerians and our visitors by subduing the current security challenges we are facing. We are still calling on the group to take our offer for dialogue in the interest of peace and development of our country.”
While the government is still exploring all options in its quest for peace, the vice president said the military and the other security agencies had been well-equipped to enforce and maintain security nationwide.
Sambo re-echoed the remarks made earlier by President Goodluck Jonathan that a strong and proactive military was pivotal to the transformation agenda of the present administration and commended NAF for the excellent air exposition.
He also said if the standard is sustained and improved upon, NAF would emerge as the most formidable air force in Africa.
Meanwhile, Useni, during the NIDOA gathering in the US, assured Nigerians that everything was being done to tackle the current security challenges posed by Boko Haram so as to restore peace to the country.
Absolving Jonathan of any blame in the precarious security situation in some states, he argued that the president cannot be running both the federal government and the states at the same time.
Governors, he added, had a lot to do in terms of ensuring the security of lives and property in their states, noting that ACF had sent emissaries to the states where bomb attacks had taken place, with a view to assisting the governors in tackling the challenge.
He also said ACF recently visited the president to assure him of the organisation’s support in tackling the security challenges in the north.
“We are all working together, the government has also agreed to dialogue with Boko Haram and the ACF has told the president that we are ready to give him the support so that we can move forward,” he said.
Chairman, House Committee on Diaspora Affairs, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, urged Nigerians abroad to always think of how they could contribute to the peace and development of Nigeria and improve the nation's image.Abike also urged NIDOA, the umbrella organisation for all Nigerians residing in North, South America and the Caribbean, to strive to be more attractive so that it would appeal to all Nigerians abroad irrespective of regional or tribal background.
In his remarks, Chairman of NIDOA, Mr. Ganiyu Dada, urged the Nigerian government to expedite efforts to create the Nigeria in the Diaspora Commission which had been in the offing for about a decade.
Dada said many Nigerians living abroad had a lot to contribute to the development of the country, but regretted that there was no commission in place that would facilitate such contributions.

A letter to Big Brother from the Kasie(NAMIBIA)

Here we go
Dear Big Brother a.k.a Biggie,
Namibia sent you two young nat agter die ore girls who embarrassed us on the first night by being the first to ask for chwala (alcohol) just a few minutes into the house and suiping (drinking) it like there is no tomorrow.
Don’t give them alcohol again please – let them steal it or zula from others if they have to.
Because, ai hene, you have no idea what will happen when they bring out their Tura manners. You are lucky, they forgot to stash the 061 big brown bottles (Windhoek Lager) into their luggage, otherwise it would probably not just have been tongues wagging but bottles flying in all directions after someone rubbed them the wrong way.
Big Brother, I am not saying they would have done it per se – they look like classy ladies, but be warned that Namibians don’t just argue, cry and then go to bed after being pissed off when in that delusional state.
Ask our mbashu (shebeen) owners here in da Tura what happens after a night of heavy partying, how many broken bottles they have to sweep out the next morning and how they run out of Elasto Plus bandages. An example is our barking artist who has won several awards in the land of Mandela but who has also had his share of bad luck that left him with some unwanted facial decorations.
Biggie, have you ever thought about the families that could be traumatised because of your entertainment show? My broer, not every contestant in your show comes from an upmarket surburb where neighbours only see each once a year or on television.
In da Tura, everybody knows what you wore yesterday, what you ate, drank and who you saw. Every lokasie here has its own Tant Mina – that notorious auntie who always knows something about everybody.
I don’t know where Junia and Jessica come from but I am praying that they don’t come from our own xomacha (upside down) Tura because I can tell you now that Tant Mina has already started making her rounds and poisoning every other neighbour against those girls’ families.
Don’t worry about Lady May, our contestant in Upville though. She can stand her own woman. Last time she sent shivers down the spines of all the Tant Minas when she stuck out her middle finger and uttered some words not fit for this page. But since you insist on knowing what she said, Biggie – she said, “Good night mother lovers.”
I don’t think even the tokolosies would want to look in her direction when she talks, they know not to mess with her.
Those other housemates in Upville and some lousy Nija fans are kamma surprised about the behaviour of the lady of the fifth month – they are just jealous, man.
NBC (our national broadcaster) can keep its cheap change that it denied the ‘Naked One’ for expressing her right to be pissed off. We are going for the big moola, Biggie. Warn Africa that all those fake-eyed and fake-haired contestants have nothing on Lady May’s natural beauty – Roki the ‘Weirdo’ from Zim can attest to that.
And when you meet Lady M in the diary room, please tell her not to fall for Roki’s advances; she must rather go for ‘Scary Weave’ from Zambia’s advice and marry a laanie when she comes out of that house. Word has it that they are better at handling such loads of dollars and won’t advise the ‘Naked One’ to open another car wash and a mbashu in da Tura.
With that, I salute you Biggie!
Sorry Ngo!

Jessica Alba: 'There Are Some Women Who Dress For Men - I Dress For Myself'

Jessica Alba
Jessica Alba wasn't ready to become a Maxim-esque sex symbole after her breakout role starring on Fox's hit show .Dark Angel.

In a new interview for the June issue of Marie Claire magazine, Alba reveals that she was uncomfortable with the public's perception of her after the network promoted the show regularly with images of the star in sexy skin-tight outfits.

"I had a show [Dark Angel] that premiered when I was 19. And right away, everyone formed a strong opinion about me because of the way I was marketed," she says. I was supposed to be sexy, this tough action girl. That's what people expected... I felt like I was being objectified, and it made me uncomfortable. I wanted to be chic and elegant!"

But a successful marriage and two children later, Jessica now feels more confident about her looks and sense of style.

"Now that I'm older, I've learned how to own it," she says, "but I'm still not very overt.

"There are some women who dress for men. I dress for myself. It took me some time to get here. Being a mom and feeling grown-up have helped. Now if I'm going to wear something short, it has to have a high neck or a little sci-fi toughness to it, an edge."

Mother's Fury After Facebook BANS Her From Posting Pictures Of Her Baby

A furious mother is demanding answers from Facebook as to why they took down photographs she posted on the site of her son, who was born with a rare birth defect, and then later banned her from the site altogether.

Grayson James Walker, from Memphis, Tennessee, was born on February 15, 2012 with Anencephaly, a rare neural tube birth defect in which a baby is born without parts of the brain and skull.
His parents Heather and Patrick Walker knew 16 weeks into the pregnancy their son would not live very long due to his birth defect.

'They of course gave us the option to terminate,' said Heather. But they chose to carry their baby full term and turned to God for strength.'My husband and I, we started prayer and we knew that God knew since the beginning of time that he had us for this,' she said.

The couple were fully prepared to have to say goodbye to him on the same day they welcomed him into the world.
So, with the help of non-profit organization Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep, they had a professional photographer to take photos of their newborn, just the same way as they did with their other two children and what most parents around the world do.

He only lived for eight hours but the Walkers wanted to capture his short life so his memory could live on forever.
Heather explained to Fox News that she uploaded the pictures on to her Facebook page so she could share them with family and friends.

In most of the pictures, baby Grayson is wearing a hat. But in some, he was not.
Heather explained: 'Not long after, Facebook deleted them because of the content. They allow people to post almost nude pictures of themselves, profanity, and so many other things but I'm not allowed to share a picture of God's beautiful creation.'
After repeatedly putting the removed picture on her profile, her account was temporarily disabled.
According to Facebook's community standards page, there are nine types of content that may be deemed offensive and removed: Violence and Threats, Self-Harm, Bullying and Harassment, Hate Speech, Graphic Violence, Nudity and Pornography, Identity and Privacy, Intellectual Property and Phishing and Spam
Heather said she has no idea which category the picture of her child without the hat falls under but has now launched a protest  - posting the picture several times and getting her friends and family to contact Facebook.
Patrick Walker said of his son: 'You know, my son lived almost eight hours, and he's already done in eight hours what I could never do in a hundred lifetimes, and that's awesome.'
As of today, Heather's Facebook page is active again and the picture of Grayson which was deemed 'graphic' has not been removed.
Facebook have yet to provide a statement.
